| ====== WTF (What's This For) ====== | ====== Abbreviations, Acronyms, and Initialisms ====== |
| | |
| Well, I decided I wanted a wiki, so here it is. I plan to use it as a place where I can put some //mostly useful// stuff that is of interest to me and may be of interest to others, | |
| | |
| ===== #1 - Abbreviations, Acronyms, and Initialisms ===== | |
| |
| I had realized over the years of working as an engineer, that people like to throw around the word 'acronym' whenever there is an abbreviation for something. The term three-letter acronym (TLA) became common, and was used simply because there was a three-letter abbreviation. But, just because it's an abbreviation doesn't make it an acronym. In fact, I don't think there are very many three-letter acronyms and I only show one, and it's really used incorrectly. Anyway, I put together the following page to help correct this major societal faux pas. Hopefully, it's in time to prevent any international conflicts. | I had realized over the years of working as an engineer, that people like to throw around the word 'acronym' whenever there is an abbreviation for something. | ===== #2 - Habits ===== | |
| |
| Over the years I've been trying to improve my habits and try to make better use of my time. I've read a couple of books that I enjoyed, and tried to learn from. The //**Power Of Habit**// by Charles Duhigg is really interesting. I'm always impressed by people who can do research and then write about it in an interesting way. | |
| |
| The other book I read was //**Atomic Habits**// by James Clear. I'll be honest, this book has some great information and no doubt will teach the reader something about habits. But when the author describes a terrible accident he had early in life, followed by his recovery, I was disappointed that he failed to see the grace of God in that, and in fact seems to admire Sam Harris, a noted atheist. | |
| |
| In an effort to try to change my habits and track my improvement, I build a simple website that allows anyone to print-off what I call a [[https://HabitTrackerChart.com/|Habit Tracker Chart]] which then allows them to identify some behaviors that they want to change and track their progress. The [[https://HabitTrackerChart.com/|Habit Tracker Chart]] is free to use and if you do use it I hope you find it useful. (How's that for overusing "use?") | |

| ===== #3 - Usability ===== | |
| So, I got into web development back in 1995. Back then things were still new. Over the years I learned what was good, and what was bad in terms of how information was presented on the Internet. That became usability; what makes a web site usable. Over time, I began to recognize usability issues all over the place. Signs in stores, advertisement in print, on vehicles, and on the web. Sop, in this section I will work to include some of those, and as will everything here, I will add to it when I find something to ad. | |
| |
| Here's a few: | |
| |
| * Date formatting and when to use human-readable dates. | |
| * Domain names, and what in the world is the matter with companies. | |
| * Signs, and what in the world is the matter with companies. | |
| |
| These are just some of the topics. I have content and will add it tomorrow. | |
| |
| |
| ===== #4 - Mac Stuff ===== | |
| I use a Mac. From time-to-time I need to remember how I did something. I got tired of trying to remember these things, so, I'm listing them here. Maybe these will help you. But they will help me. | |
| |
| * My zsh bash files, and references to where I found the information. | |
| |
| |
| ===== #5 - Apache Stuff ===== | |
| * My Apache settings. I'll include the .conf file, the extras stuff, and the hosts file. Yes, I can save these someplace else, but maybe they will help you. | |
| * Some .htaccess stuff because I see that I've been using Apache v2.2 style and I should be using v2.4. Part of the reason this even came up was that I block IPs that are trying to access some of my sites, but, I still see those IPs coming through, and I have no idea why, or how. So, I'm changing and I'll try to report on any improvement. | |
| |
| |
| ===== #6 - Safety Stuff ===== | |
| * Safety programs I think we need. | |
| | |
| ===== #7 - Quotes ===== | |
| |
| Every once in a while I come across quotes that I like. They resonate with me and have a meaning that seems to capture great ideas, in a succinct way. Anyway, I'm listing those here and adding to them as I come across them. Enjoy | |

| ===== #8 - Facebook ===== | |
| Like <del>many</del> most people in the country, I experimented with Facebook. It was nice in the beginning being able to reconnect with people from earlier years. But aside from seeing photos or getting updates on a person, it has little value. And now that we should all know that Facebook is not trying to help people connect, but is trying to control people's lives, it's really time to go. People are leaving Facebook. People are realizing what it really is. I came across [[https://www.livefirelabs.com/concerns_about_facebook.htm|this webpage]] the other day and even though it's dated January 2020, it's very relevant. It's a short read.
